Tourism in Venezuela

Recomendations to the Visitors

Required documents

Passport and visa/tourist card required. During your stay in Venezuela you should always carry your passport which should be valid a further six months. If required, always show your documents to officials.

Weather and Clothing

Venezuela is a tropical country. Therefore, we recommend light garments but include a sweater in case it becomes cooler. If you are planning to go to the Andes, dont forget a thick jacket and socks, temperatures can go below 5 degrees at high altitude. The rainy season is from May to November.

Currency

Bs. Bolívar (bolívares - plural) The traveller can exchange foreign currency (US dollars and Sterling - we recommend you to bring US $.) in the Bureau the Change in most major cities and at the reception desk of most hotels. Credit cards are accepted in the main commercial outlets such as restaurants, shops and hotels, but only in the main cities and tourist centres.

Language

The official language is Spanish, but in most hotels and top restaurants it is possible to speak other languages, especially English, Italian, French and German.

Electricity

Venezuela and its islands have a 110v/60Hz cycle electric current.

Health

Private medical services are good in most cases, however it is a good idea to acquire an international insurance policy. Many of these agencies have representatives in Venezuela and offer an excellent service in emergency situations during your trip.

Tap water is not drinkable. Avoid unwashed raw foods and undercooked meats, especially in rural areas.

Yellow fever vaccination is recommended but not compulsory for travel in more rural areas.

If you travel to the Amazon or the Plains, it is highly recommended to protect yourself against insects; use a hat or cap, light boots. Never forget the sunscreen lotion, especially if you go to the beach and you are not used to a tropical sun.

Bon Appetite

The varied ethnic content of our culture is reflected in the food, combining Indian, European, African and even Asian touches. Among the local dishes we recommend pabellón(a dish consisting of black beans, rice, shredded meat and fried plantain) cachapas (a round, thin bread made of ground maize) and the traditional arepas (Indian bread made of maize)

About Souvenirs

Do not buy souvenirs made of animal parts such as feathers, bill, claws or furs which is forbidden by law. Moreover remember that the marketing of these objects endangers the survival of certain species.
